Marilyn “Granny” Joyce Sumner, age 79 years, of Whitley City, Kentucky died Saturday, May 14, 2022 at her home.
She was born in Wiborg, Kentucky on December 25, 1942 the daughter of Rev. France and Desda (Strunk) Jones. Marilyn was of the Baptist Faith being a member at the Greenwood Missionary Baptist Church, and she truly loved all her brothers and sisters in Christ. She had worked as a machine operator in the Shirt and Tent Factories, but was known well for her cooking in multiple restaurants.
Her parents; daughter, Teresa Coffey; brothers, Mearle Jones and Ruthel Jones; and sisters, Lois “Sis” Vanover, Phyllis Vanover; and Patsy Owens precede her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Ray Sumner, whom she married April 29, 1961; sons, Jeffery Sumner of Whitley City, Kentucky, Kevin Sumner of Oneida, Tennessee, Scott Sumner and wife, Debbie of Pine Knot, Kentucky, and Barry Sumner and wife, Cindy of Whitley City, Kentucky; brother, Sheral Jones and wife, Linda of Whitley City, Kentucky; grandchildren, Jeremy, Justin, Brandon, Jacob, Eleshia, Johnny, Seth, Annessa, Tyler, and Ryan; and 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2pm Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at the McCreary County Funeral Home with Bro. John Goodin, Bro. Terry West, and Bro. Bill Patrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Barren Fork Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 6pm Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at the Funeral Home.
