Margaret Leona Ates, “Aunt Margaretâ€, of Pine Knot, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at her home. Memorial services were held Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the McCreary County Funeral Home with Shaman Ken Phillips of the Southeastern Kentucky Native Band of People, conducting services.
She was born June 8, 1948 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Joseph Barnett and Annie Mae (Perkins) Barnett. Margaret was a member of the Catholic faith and a member of the Southeastern Kentucky Association of Native People.
Her father, mother, brother, William Barnett, and sisters, Mary E. Smith and Pearl N. Tramper precede her in death.
Survivors include a special niece and caregiver, Anna M. Smart Hardwick of Pine Knot, Kentucky and grandchildren, Joshua Smart of Pine Knot, Kentucky and Maria Ball of Monticello, Kentucky. Numerous adopted nieces and nephews, who called her “Aunt Margaretâ€, also survive.
McCreary County Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.
